[MAGAZINE INTERVIEW] Chungha for Marie Claire July 2017: “Fresh Moment”
Our girls I.O.I finished their short-term official activities. Amongst the members is Chungha who uniquely decided upon solo activities. I met Chungha’s clear face, having kicked off the gorgeous charisma from the stage.

Are you very busy lately?

I’m busy preparing for my single album showcase. I have to constantly practice the choreography and I haven’t slept properly for a few days so my skin is dry.

What do you do as soon as you wake up in the morning?

Take care of Bambi. As soon as I wake up, I look for Bambi. I’m busy giving her food and cleaning up anything she messed up at night.

Who is #1 in your call list?

My manager. Not just because of my schedules but I contact her all day like she’s my real sister.

When was the most recent moment you felt happy?

When I took a foot bath. My dad bought me a foot bath so I sit on the sofa and soak my feet in hot water while watching TV. That’s when I’m the happiest. My dog would sit on my lap. My feet tend to swell easily but they’ve gotten better thanks to the foot bath.

Are there any parts of you that you think is pretty?

My eyelashes. I take after my mom so my eyelashes are long and thick. Lately they’ve been thinning, but even when I was recording Produce 101, I didn’t wear false eyelashes and only put on some mascara.

Do you specifically manage your body?

I don’t exercise because I spend most of the day dancing. Instead I loosen my muscles. My body is stiffer than it seems. Before and after practicing choreography, I loosen my shoulders and thighs with animal waacking. I also have symptoms of a herniated disc so when I sleep I try to sleep as straight as possible. I don’t even use a pillow.

Do you have a personal stretching secret?

I have a habit of pushing my muscles too far. I unconsciously knead my arms and legs and sometimes I pinch them. I occasionally do pelvic stretches or splits as well.

You waist is so small, do you diet too?

Honestly, I’m dieting now. (laughs) I’m sure the fans who have watched me since the beginning of I.O.I know, but I lost a ton of weight. I don’t believe in losing a lot of weight quickly in short terms. As I adjusted my diet, I slowly lost weight little by little.

Can you tell us your diet?

I have a heartier appetite than it may seem so my nickname is “grandma.” (laughs) I like brown rice and mixed grain rice over white rice, and I like bitter fresh juice, too. Ah, right. I also really love onions. If you fry onions slightly until they’re yellow without any seasoning and eat it as a side dish, it lowers your cholesterol and has low calories. Lately before my debut performance, my stamina drops quickly so I drink red ginger tea instead of bottled water. When I want a snack, I eat dried sweet potatoes made by my manager.

I heard that you like make up.

It’s fun to wear make up. I’m slightly timid but when I put on make up, I feel like I have confidence. I enjoy coral or pink-brown gradation eye make up.

What make up can you never give up?

Mascara. I’m obsessed with the gaps in my eyelashes. Eyelashes that are properly spaced out without clumping are pretty.

What kind of scent do you like?

Lately, I’ve been addicted to lavender and vanilla scents. Sweet scenes put me in a good mood.

How do you take care of your skin?

Always sleeping mask! I usually clean my skin with toner and apply a sleeping mask and fall asleep. About once a week, I apply an eye cream to my whole face and put lots of sleeping mask to give [my skin] nutrition.

What’s your personal stress reliever? Is it perhaps alcohol?

I tend to drink alcohol when I’m in a good mood. And I also eat a lot of different delicious foods. Just once! Not to binge. First I invite a lot of my friends over to my house and then spread all the food we want to eat on the table, whether it be pig trotters or chicken, and try all of it little by little.

What do you do when you’re alone in your room?

I’m the same as my peers. I play around on my phone. When I’m going through a hard time or when I’m depressed, I light a scented candle and either read my diary that I’ve written in since I was a trainee or read fan letters and let myself heal.

What kind of image do you want to show through your solo album?

Instead of I.O.I member Chungha, I want to become closer with my friends as solo artist Chungha. Now I’m really standing alone. Because I’m known for my dancing since Produce 101, you may think that the choreography for my solo title song will be difficult but we made it so that it’ll be easy for anyone to follow. Since it’s summer, I’d like it if everyone could dance together to the fun music.

Who is your muse?

Lee Hyori. I’ve been an avid fan since my childhood. She’s so cool even now. I want to have a similar dignified attitude as Lee Hyori.

What do you do before falling asleep?

Is it okay if my answer is boring? I make sure my phone is charging and I wear a scented eye mask. I bought a ton from Japan, do you want one? (laughs).
