He loves me, He loves me not

He loves me, He loves me not

She was upset. The evidence was clear from the sight of her flushed cheeks, stained with tears and the slight stench of alcohol that clung to her. Whenever she was upset she always found herself here.

It was a field of flowers about fifteen minutes away from Seoul and she had always sought refuge here to get away from the busy streets of the city she now called home.

Grabbing hold of a nearby flower’s stem she pulled it out her fingers gently caressing the soft petals.

“He loves me… He loves me not… He loves me… He loves me not”

“What are you doing mummy?”

“I’m trying to define fate honey, come here” patting the spot beside her the 4 year old made her way towards her mother.

Her mother loved flowers so it was a shock to the toddler why her mother would be tearing the petals off of the flower she now held.

“This is a little game a friend of mine showed me when I was studying in France. Each time you pluck off a petal you say the phrases ‘He loves me or He loves me not’ for each petal”

Proceeding to show the young brunette she plucked off one petal at a time as she spoke the phrases.

“How does that define fate mummy?”

“It’s only a silly game sweetie, but they say that the last petal and phrase shows whether the person you like and yourself share the same feelings. They usually use daisies though-”

“ewwww…” the four year old scrunched her nose as her mother let out a soft chuckle “but you have daddy so why are you playing the game?”

“Just for fun. You’ll understand better when you’re my age” she could only smile as a quizzical look crossed the toddlers face

“Mummy?”

“yeah?”

“That’s not a daisy”

“I know, I think Sunflowers are better” she smiled back playing with the flower in her hands.

The click of the door had the toddler dashing off. Smiling again her mother watched as the toddler ran off into her fathers’ waiting arms.

...

She scoffed as she took in the sight of the bright yet familiar yellow petals of the flower she now held. It was none other than a sunflower.

She wiped at her eyes in frustration yet it seemed the tears were endless. Sniffing she stared at the flower. Although it was silly she started to whisper the phrases that her mother had been fond of as she plucked off the petals of the sunflower.

 “He loves me…”

How could she forget? She had been the school’s nerd, a straight A student who found sanctuary in the school library and he was the school’s Prince.

He was always surrounded by friends while she found friends in characters within her books.

Everything he was, she was not.

To put it simply they were polar opposites, so it was a surprise to her that he knew her name.

“Uhm..S-Sooyoung-ssi?”

The brunette tore her gaze away from her book. The weather was nice and she had left the comforts of the school library to soak in the summer weather on a bench under the shades of a tree. Looking up she was met with a pair of brown eyes, her own soon scrunching in slight confusion and surprise. It was Luhan, the school’s heart throb.

No one ever spoke to her and neither did she to others. So it was a wonder to her how she found her voice when she replied with a curt “Yeah”.

“I… I was wondering i-if you would consider d-dating me”

Instead of acting surprised she tilted her head to the side looking past Luhan. From where she sat she could see his friends who had been watching the exchange quickly ducking behind the other tree’s or playing it off as if they were doing other things.

‘Maybe this is a joke they’re playing on me.’

“T-They’re just here for support” he cut in as if reading her thoughts “You see… I’ve liked you for a long time… wait I mean I’ve liked you since the day you set foot into our class when you transferred here a year ago.” He seemed flustered and the brunette couldn’t help but smile a little.

She watched him in amusement as he continued to ramble on.

“I’ve always wanted to talk to you… but I-I get so nervous and I don’t want to say something weird that will scare you off-“

“Okay” she smiled interrupting him.

“and make you think I’m… wait what?” She couldn’t help but smile at the look of shock on his face.

“I mean okay… I’ll consider dating you”

“R-really? I-I uhm Thank you!”

After their brief exchanging of numbers she watched his retreating back as he ran off towards his friends playfully slapping him on the back as they headed off together.

She almost choked when his panda looking friend turned around, pausing momentarily to yell out.

“WELCOME TO THE FAMILY SOOYOUNG NOONA!”

He had a whole line of admirers in front of him and yet it had seemed his attention had always been focused on her.

...

A sob left as her vision blurred some more.

“He loves me not…”

She let more tears fall as she plucked another petal off the sunflower.

“Stop it Sooyoung!” It was their first argument and she was upset that it seemed he was blaming her.

“You’re making it seem like this is my fault Luhan!”

“Because it is!” He ran his hand through his hair in frustration as he glared at the brunette.

“Why are you getting angry over something so little? It’s not that big of a deal”

“So you having other guys hanging on you and you letting them touch you despite the fact that you have a boyfriend isn’t a big deal?” the brunette could not believe it.

“What the hell is that supposed to mean Luhan?” The fact he had put it that way made her feel as if he was labelling her as some cheap toy for guys to play with.

He had his head turned away from her. “You know exactly what I mean”

Her heart broke. Grabbing her keys she had marched out the door before jumping into her car and driving off. That was the same day she had found this place.

...

“but he loves me…”

Firm arms wrapped around her waist as she turned around in surprise to find familiar brown eyes smiling back at her. She returned her own smile as her arms instinctively wrapped around his neck.

“ugh. I know you guys are all over each other but save it for when we’re not here” Jessica smirked at the two as she struggled with two large bags.

The brunette smiled back before sticking her tongue out at the petite girl.

“Let them be babe” Kris wrapped his own arms around the haughty blonde before shooing the couple ahead.

They were in Hawaii enjoying a good break from the hassles of being college students, and the brunette couldn’t express how thankful she was. She had a sweet and caring boyfriend and not to mention friends.

If it wasn’t for Luhan she would’ve been stuck in the shell of the girl who once hid behind books. She watched as seven more figures came through the arrivals area, another ten taller figures following, each struggling with what seemed to be the belongings of the seven girls who now swarmed over to drag the brunette and the blonde into a large group hug.

Sooyoung didn’t miss the tight bond between Luhan and the eleven boys he had donned as his own brothers but even then it had allowed her the opportunity to meet eight more important women in her life.

“Sooyoung! Jessica!” The girls called out

“Youngie, Why are you crying? Is it Luhan again?”

“N-no Yoong” she chuckled “I’m just happy”

“Oh you… I swear I will punch his pretty face if he makes you cry again” pulling the brunette into a tighter hug Sooyoung could only let out a soft chuckle which stopped short when she saw the serious look on Yoona’s face.

Looking over Yoona’s shoulder she caught Luhan watching before she silently mouthed a ‘Thank you’, and soon enough he had walked over to wrap her in a warm hug.

“No. Thank you” he whispered.

...

Sighing she tore off another petal as she tried to fight back the new set of tears b.

“He loves me not…”

Lately Luhan had been avoiding her. She’d tried to look over the past few nights he’d been coming home late, the way he had been dodging her questions and his cold exterior towards her.

It was their fourth anniversary today and she had reached her limit when she wanted to surprise him at work only to walk in on him and his secretary making out.

Dropping the handmade lunch she’d made she’d left with her heart in , ignoring his calls as she ran out.

The buzzing feeling the tequila had offered was starting to reside as she slowly came to her senses. The brunette was a mess, and she scolded herself at the thought she had been driving under the influence of alcohol.

She stared out into the setting sun, struggling with a smile. The sunset was beautiful yet she couldn’t find the beauty in it.

He loves me,

He loves me not,

He loves me,

He loves me not,

He loves me…

Only silent tears trailed down her cheeks as she plucked at the petals.... What happened to the so called fate her mother had talked about?

Screw it.

Pulling off the last petal she recited the last phrase.

“He loves me not.”

Dropping the stem she hugged her knees as she watched the setting sun with a sad smile.

“He loves you”

The brunette turned her head in shock at the familiar voice, her eyes meeting the brown ones she had come to love. Her smile disappeared as everything came rushing back. In haste she stood to leave when he pulled her into a strong hug.

“Let me go!” The brunette tried to fight back the new onset of tears as she pushed him away.

“Soo, please let me explain”

He sounded hurt. Sooyoung resisted the urge to fight back as he pulled her in closer to his chest, one hand coming up to gently caress her long hair.

“I’m sorry Soo. I’m Sorry.” He let out a sigh his hand still running through her hair.

“Whatever you saw back there was nothing”

“Nothing? You were kissing her!” She pushed herself off only to have his hands catching her own again.

“Wait, no” He chuckled as the brunette glared at him

“It’s not funny Luhan”

“I know, I’m sorry it’s just…She was helping me fix my tie”

“But…But”

“But nothing Soo, I was on my way to surprise you but you surprised me instead when I saw you at my office” Cupping her cheek he wiped her tears. “I wanted today to be special since we’ve been dating for four years now but it seems I can never surprise you”

“How did you know I was here?”

“I followed you…that day we had our first fight, and every other time you’ve been upset I always followed you here.”

Her heart fluttered at the thought that maybe he really did care for her.

“That still doesn’t explain why you’ve been coming home late, dodging my questions and being so cold to me”

“I’m sorry Soo. Since it’s not a surprise anymore… I’ve been coming home late because I was planning a dinner for our anniversary to celebrate with our friends and as much as it hurt you I was hurting myself too when I acted cold. You’re persistent and I knew that you’d somehow get me to tell you everything and ruin the surprise so I had to.”

He smiled as the brunette scrunched her nose, a habit he knew she unconsciously did whenever she knew he was right and she was wrong.

Soon enough she had her arms wrapped around his neck mumbling a soft ‘pabo’ as he hugged her back.

“Wait, why are we celebrating with our friends?”

No longer had the words left Luhan had released himself from her grip to take the one position he knew he’d only do for the girl before him.

“How many times do you intend to make me cry today?” she smiled despite the stream of tears watching as he reached into his pocket for a small velvet box.

“Soo, I know we’ve had our ups and downs but through it all we’ve always pulled through together. I may not be the Romeo to your Juliette but one thing I did know from the first day I spoke to you was that you were the Soo to my Han.”

She let out a small giggle as his cheeks took on a tint of red.

“You know I’m not great with words but Soo, will you marry me?”

Despite her erratic heart and endless tears she didn’t fail to answer with a ‘Yes’.

Sliding the silver band onto her finger he pulled her in for a kiss soon parting for air. Staring back at the brown eyes she loved so much she couldn’t help but ask.

“You surprised me but what would you have done if I said no?”

Luhan smirked at the brunette before answering.

“You wouldn’t have, because my sunflower said you loved me too”
