My body froze and I remained rooted to my spot as Kris stared at me with an unreadable expression. How much he had heard, I couldn’t tell. Maybe I could still salvage the situation. “K -Kris,” I said, unable to keep the nervousness out of my voice. “Ha-ha, fancy seeing you around here.” How obvious could I get? Kris didn’t say anything and just continued scrutinizing me with his dark eyes. Seizing my only possible moment of escape, I started walking in the opposite direction to where he was standing. For a second I thought I could really get away without a scrape, and then I heard his footsteps just behind me. I hurried, knowing he’ll also rush his steps if he was really pursuing me; he did. I knew I should have just stopped and faced him, but out of panic, I started running instead, fast. And you know what, yes, that’s right, he did, too. In the midst of it all, I shouted, “Why are you running after me?” though I didn’t dare look back. I just focused on getting my foot in front of the other. “I wouldn’t if you would just stop running!” he yelled, and from his tone it was obvious that he was getting tired. “Stop running after me first!” “No, you stop!” “No –” “Fine,” I heard him say. Confused, I allowed myself to look back only to regret it instantly. Kris was giving it his all and was only an arm away. Eyes wide, I turned to run faster. But I was too late, Kris made a grab for my uniform and because of our momentum, he crashed unto me, sending us both rolling on the ground. And with my kind of bad luck, of course he ended up on top of me. Trapping me with both his hands on either side of me, his dark eyes burned into mine. “Who are you?” I laughed uneasily. “What kind of question is that?” “Who. Are. You?” he repeated, his eyes never leaving mine. “Uhm,” I said, looking at anywhere but him. "Cutting your sentence into one-word ones doesn’t really put emphasis on it, you know.” His closeness was all the sane thoughts out of me. He made a sound of getting irritated, and then got off me in one quick motion. “Do you know what I hate more than a person who takes things for granted?” he said, looking down at me. I gulped. His eyes narrowed. “A liar.” Before he could leave, I grabbed hold of his ankle. “Wait.” He tried to shake my hand off but I didn’t budge. “Hey, will you freaking get your hands off me?” “Wait, please,” I pleaded. “I can explain.” He looked like he didn’t believe me. “Oh yeah, then explain what I heard. Who were you talking to?” “How much have you actually heard?” I tried, getting up. “Look. I want nothing but the truth, okay? Any more or any less will get you kicked out of this school. That, I promise you.” I dusted off my uniform with my hands. “The truth?" I sighed. "The truth is, I’m not Lee Eunae.” I looked to him for his reaction but his face gave nothing away. “Then who are you?” “No one.” “I said I want nothing but the–” “Truth,” I finished for him, nodding sadly. “And that’s the bloody truth. I have no name, no background, no nothing. Honest." For the first time, a chink in Kris´ flawless expression came into view and confusion dawned on his face. "How is that possible?" I sighed. "I'm probably going to get kicked out anyway so why should I tell you?" The thought of Eunae knowing this, ugh, how could I have been so stupid? From the look on his face, he seemed to be contemplating between satisfying his curiosity and getting this whole thing over with. "I need to know the vital information before I can pass judgment," he finally said, looking unsure. "Oh really? Did you know the 'vital information' before you decided to lock me outside my room?" I said, putting air quotations on his own words. His eyebrows furrowed. "You're really not in the position to be questioning my decisions, are you?" he said sternly. "I'm giving you a chance, would you or would you not take it?" I covered my eyes with the back of my hand. "Of course I would. Any chance Kris, just so I could stay." "Then what's all this drama about?" he said, his voice icy. I could tell he was losing his patience. I put down my hand and looked at him. "Because this is you we're talking about. What are the chances you'd really help me? When you've denied me my room just because you thought I was taking things for granted? How do I know you'll really consider me this time?" "This is all about that stupid room of yours, isn't it?" Kris rolled his eyes. "Nice try, but even if you get your room back, it'd be useless if you get kicked out." I still looked at him like I couldn't believe him. He raked his fingers through his hair frustratedly and looked at me as if saying Why am I even bothering? Sensing Kris was losing his patience, my fingers shot out and curled
