idol school (2017):

yujin was a contestant on idol school.

1st exam: achoo (repl. sian)
2nd exam: pretty u (repl. yubin)
3rd exam: wee woo (repl. myungji)
debut exam: magical (repl. sian)

yujin wasn't outstanding for her talent, certainly not in the beginning. she'd been a bad dancer with a nice enough singing voice and that's all she had to say for herself. But throughout the show she made a name for herself by being funny and personable and willing to take on the jobs no one else wanted. she got her first taste of rapping that way, and at first she was pretty bad but it became a bit of a signature. she mostl got attention from her unique visuals and her surprising stage presence despite her level of skill and she quickly herself a steady top 20 spot, until she ended up finishing 12th.

filming idol school was harrowing for yujin who had never done any formal training and just had big dreams. they were locked in except for when she and the other younger contestants had to go to school. yujin and the others would often smuggle food in because the producers had put everyone on very strict diets and they were all starving. it was horrible but it created an iron bond between all of the girls and yujin loves each and every one of the fromis members and many of the other contestants with all of her heart. the shared suffering made the atmosphere very uncompetitive, the girls all just felt like a unit and they cheered each other on and helped each other out. it was super wholesome.

unfortunately for yujin, she was also a bit to handle. she was never scared for authority, and throughout the recordings lee taehyun would visit the contestants and comment on their looks and their weight. he'd exclaim how surprised he was someone like natty would be so popular, or how jiwon and eunsuh could stand to skip some dinners. one evening yujin was lightening up the mood, jokingly mocking and imitation taehyun and exclaiming that maybe he could stand to use some pounds too! unfortunately he came in right then and had overheard and she's been on his list ever since.

training intermission:

essentially from the start of her training period at what would become stone (a contract for which she'd signed at the start of idol school) she and arang  and eunyoung were getting readied to appear on produce 48, including an idol bootcamp and harsh training. yujin was put in another dorm (not locked up this time) and enrolled into sopa high school with other trainees and idols. it all happened very fast and made yujin reel.

they were initially training with another girl from idol school but her spot was taken by gyuri when it became clear that fromis_9 was a bit of a flop.

produce 48 (2018):

evaluation: C to B

round 1: boombayah (repl. go yujin)
round 2: itnw (repl. chaewon)
round 3: rollin rollin (repl. doah)

finaleSuki ni Nacchau Darō (repl. yena)

official ranking ep 1: 33

produce 48 was so different from idol school, a lot of the girls were super competitive and the environment was very stressful and cut-throat, especially in the beginning phases. yujin still had the idol school mindset of we're all in this together! she always helped the struggling girls in her class even if it didn't get broadcasted and she tried to stay true to herself while being intimidated by the talented and beautiful girls she was competing with.

official ranking ep 5: 17

and then in the first round she got picked by chaejeong in her girl crush avengers team and chaejeong was like a shark, yujin really didn't like it. after their practices were over she'd often sneak over to the other team and help chowon and hyewon out. the camera caught this and she was highlighted in the episode and her rank rose quickly.

official ranking ep 8: 9

she chose into the new world because she knew for sure that they wouldn't be able to put her into a rap corner in that song and she really wanted to show another side of herself. she ot the #1 place in the group for her angelic appearance mostly, and her sweet low but competent vocals far down the line second.

official ranking ep 11: 13

yujin is ready to join rumor or i am, what with her girl crush reputation, when she gets sorted into rollin rollin instead. she suspects foul play but, to what she must imagine is taehyun's ever-growing frustrations, the group actually gets #1 of the night! Still, her ranking drops, if that is the real ranking.

finale official ranking: 13

she actually finally managed to get center after never even doing the killing part in idol school and she's alive, she's riveting, she's electric, and she's the first produce finale center to not make the group. she cries happy tears for arang, sad tears for herself, and sad tears at their separation as arang takes the stage. she cries herself to sleep tonight while message boards around the world cite chae yujin as one of the prime evidences for rigging. how did chae yujin not make it into the group?

post produce training:

she's benched again, her contract still holds her hostage in a company that makes it increasingly clear it has no intererest in her future. taehyun gloats about his izone girls, their sales, their hype, their success. meanwhile yujin and some of the other ex-idol school girls go through the movements of training without much real hope of making it outside the stone cage.

and then one afternoon an elegant suited man walks into the trainingroom and intruduces himself as lee taejun. he takes one look around the room, spots yujin, and beckons her. would you like to debut in my group? he asks.

where do i sign? she says.

likely reasons why taejun would pick specifically her: aside from lots of hype and anticipation for her debut, i can see her basically being a pawn just to get back at taehyun and his constant bragging about how great his chosen lineup for izone is. taejun picks the one girl he knows his brother hates, and the one where he let personal vendetta get in the way of marketability and he can show that he can take the biggest cast off and turn her into a star.

scandals/headlines:

➳ idol school's bae eunyoung, shin arang and chae yujin to joi produce 48.

➳ international fans cry foul as chae yujin just falls short of debuting.

➳ idol school and produce 48's chae yujin to debut in cj e&m subsidiary group lune blue.

➳ insiders list lune's chae yujin and lee gaeun as the most likely contestants rigged out of izone. shin arang and kang heywon suspected of being rigged in.

➳ lots of lune vs. izone and chae yujin vs. shin arang comparisons. it hurts yujin to see people use her as amunition to hurt arang like this, but there is nothing she can do.

background
birthname: chae yujin (+채유진)
other names:

:: chai - a nickname close to her real name. she wanted to use it as stage name but due to her survival show participation it was thought better than she use her real name.

birthdate: 12/28/2002
birthplace: busan, korea
hometown: busan, korea
ethnicity: korean
nationality: korean

languages:

:: korean - native though she retains some of her busan dialect when she's destressed. it's one of the things taehyun used to humiliate her with most and she's worked very hard to use a seoul dialect since she started training.

::  she never really learned any other languages seriously, the training at stone didn't focus on it much (maybe because they didn't really expect to debut them). after they debut though yujin will try to learn some more so she can communicate with fans.

faceclaim: loona - olivia hye
backups: izone - kim minju

height & weight: 164cm / 48kg

appearance: the triangle lips set her apart for everyone to see, yujin isn't a classic visual but she has the kind of looks that make you turn your head. unique visuals that might put her above the prettiest of blank canvas. she's very good at facials and has a natural charisma on stage, though off she can be a little awkward in the spotlight.

style: off-stage her style isn't very exciting, yujin likes dark colors and simplicity and comfort above anything else with maybe a little bit of an edgy flair. she'll listen to stylists when it comes to anything official and actually does take an interest in clothes when there's someone who knos what they're doing there to explain it to her.
howl to the lune
personality

sweet, loyal, helpful, low self-esteem, anxious, eager to please, effervescent, genuine
:: ISFP ::

yujin is a fizzing bath bomb filled with nervous but cautiously positive energy. she's someone so desperate for approval, she's spent two survival shows and 2 years of trainin trying and failing to get that approval. it has destroyed the self-esteem that she once had, constantly being told that she just about isn't good enough. so she tries to wring herself into the shapes that are expected of her, obediently doing what everyone wants her to do.

except the one thing you can't ask of her is leave her team player energy behind, even if that's just what's being asked of her in the lune drama. it feels so very wrong to stick to her own team and watch the other struggle, but it's not like the lune black girls reach out to her either and some have probably been plenty mean and they look at her like she's an intrudor they would rather see vanished and it shrinks her down to a tiny form. it makes her feel small and inconsequential and diminished.

but then idoldom itself builds her back up again. yujin is really good at fan service and she's very genuine in how much she loves interacting with fans and how much she loves standing on stage. that's what got her the votes in the shows and it's what continues to get her fans as an idol. in these instances it doesn't matter that yujin is and will always be mediocre skill-wise. her fans don't care, they tell her that what she has to give is enough for them.

but she's a doormat, she's so easily taken advantage of. she'll do whatever you ask, she'll genuinely ask how you're doing and ask if she can help. she's so very sweet and wants so badly to be helpful, to be of use in a situation, to not let people down.

background

yujin's life was pretty ordinary before she decided, spur of the moment, to apply for the reality show that promised to make her an idol without any prior experience. her dad slaved away for a corporation, forever a middling manager, her mother supplemented their income working as a nurse. they were always busy but loved yujin very much and supported her in the things she wanted to do and try, which was a lot.

you see yujin had been looking for her thing since she was about 6 years old. ballet wasn't her thing and she quit that when she sprained her ankle. playing piano wasn't her thing. playin flute wasn't her thing. football wasn't her thing though she enjoyed playing rough and stuck to that the longest of all the thing she'd tried.  baseball definitely wasn't for her. her studies weren't for her and her grades never went above average. video games weren't her thing either. and acting? deeefinitely not her thing. yujin struggled to find anything that she was actually good at, she was always overshadowed by others with natural talent and aptitude and easily discouraged when she couldn't catch up.

so, when mnet started advertising for idol school with the slogan "you don't need talent, only visuals", it tugged something inside yujin. she didn't have to be good at anything! and oh boy she was horrible at dancing and only ok at singing, but mnet said right there that she didn't have to be good, only pretty! and people had been telling yujin how pretty and cute she was since she was a little triangle-mouthed baby, she had this.

so at the tender age of 14, little yujin applied for idol school and started the roller coasted of her trainee career.

relationships

:: lee taeha

yujin doesn't like taeha much. he teases too much, takes too much pleasure into making her uncomfortable (which it does as she stammers her responses to questions she wasn't prepared for). she avoids him when she can.

:: lee taejun

yujin is grateful that she taken out of the stone dungeon for this, she appreciates it a lot, but she doesn't like feeling like she's just a chess piece in a ame between taejun and taehyun. she knows that if she succeeds it'll be a blow to taehyun and if she fails it'll be a blow to taejun and it puts so so much pressure only her petite little shoulders. sometimes she feels she might topple over.

:: lee taejun

yujin is just a little scared of giran. nothing of his fault, he's been nothing but kind to her, but yujin has never met an out gay person before in her life and he intimidates her. there are questions she's afraid to ask lest she offend him, and she just doesn't understand it yet.

little does she know that giran actually does take care of her. she's one of the youngest and he catches on that she's a little uncomfortable with skirts or short shorts and tries to give her long pants whenever he can.
trivia
➳ she prefers singing over rapping but rap is what stone pushed for her since that's what she initially gained popularity for.

➳ since taehyun hates her so much, yujin doesn't quite know why he chose her for produce 48. part of her thinks that maybe he just wanted her to feel how it was to fail again, and she takes a little joy in knowing how annoyed he must have been when she kept raking in votes.

➳ her real rank in idol school was #9.

➳ her real rank in produce 48 was also #9

➳ yujin really isn't that good at performing, the only thing she's good at is a certain kind of girl crush expression. she's only a 'good' dancer, is only a 'decent' rapper and singer, and is a pretty bad model. but she proved that you don't really need to have stage presence or skill to be a popular idol.

➳ her go-to only mastered expression is the mouth-half-open eyes-half-closed and she uses it whenever she can.

➳ yujin is biual but she's not quite aware of her attraction to women yet.

name: shin arang
birthdate: 04/19/02
faceclaim: yunkyung

personality: arang is a sweet and gentle girl. she tries her best to be good enough for the world though it's hard when everything she does gets criticized. she's often seen as one of the least attractive members in iz*one and she was pushed really hard as a vocalist durin the show. she did her best to grow and she works really hard to make everyone's expectations a reality. she's a little fragile and isol life and constant judgement have given her some anxiety issues as well but she always tries to be positive for the sake of everyone else. she raises yujin up and has always believed and hoped that yujin would end up making it.

love story: arang and yujin became fast friends when their very first song mission in idol school put them together. they trained together afterwards, suffered together in produce 48, and arang's heart broke into a million pieces when yujin didn't make it into iz*one (televised eagerly by the producers).

they're the kind of best friends who are clingy and touchy with each other, they tell each other everything and support each other and it hurts them both so much when the media plays them up against each other or fans of either try to tear the other down to raise their favorite up. arang and yujin just want to be happy for each other and just want to see the other succeed but the fans make it so hard.

the iz*one rigging scandal hit arang hard because she knows very well that she was the one who was rigged in over yujin. she feels ashamed that she took away yujin's chances even when yujin did land on her feet. they should have debuted together is what yujin thinks every time they see each other. she loves arang so much and would have done anything to debut together.

and then a kiss changes their lives.

ending: i would like them to start figuring out their feelings for each other! no tragic gays trope, please.

trivia:

➳ if the actual votes were used, arang would have been eliminated in the penultimate elimination round, or she would have placed 15th in the finale.

➳ both of them are pressured by their companies to quit school but it's one of the few times where they can just hang out.
