[RANT] So much gender bender fics out there it's making my head hurt

I have to day that here on AFF, it has become more common for me to stumble over a snsd fic with gender bender rather than one where the girls are just girls.

I don't even know why it's like this; is it because the author is against same- relationships? Because I don't see why they would do it for fun - why not turn them both into boys then?

As a multi-fandomer, I've read both girlxgirl fics and boyxboy fics, and still I hardly ever see the gender bender theme being used in the fics.

But I mean, fine, people are entitled to write whatever they want to and if someone want to go write a gender bender fic, I'm not gonna start bashing them. I just simply want to know why, but frankly there are only a few explanations I can come up with, either

  1. the author is in fact against same- relationship
  2. the author does it for fun (why though????) and lastly,
  3. the author thinks more people read het-fics, and therefore writes a gender bender fic because they think they will get more readers this way.

the first explanation is just plain bull to me, and I want to rule it out, but I still think some might actually write gender bender fic for this reason, and if so, I'm gonna repeat myself - I think it's plain bull. If you're against same- relationships, you don't ship two girls, right? So why would you feel the need to change one of them into a male and then write about them if you don't ship them in the first place? The need shouldn't be there  in that case.

as for the second explanation, this might be the case for some, but I don't get it. If it's so fun, why not just pick a real het-pairing to write about?

and the third reason... whoever think like this is (at least I really hope so) wrong, because I can't even remember how many times I've been looking at a fic for the first time, been reading the summary and thinking "this sounds nice, I'm gonna check it out" but then been completely thrown off when discovering it's a gender bender fic. I literally do this face every time;

 and I have a hard time believing I'm the only one.

I wonder if this is only an AFF-trend (I somehow think so) and I'm not gonna be all "BUT I HOPE IT IS!!!" now because like I said, people are entitled to write whatever they want, as long as it's not offending me as a person.

I guess I'm just wondering why "bending the genders" is so popular, but I guess I'll never get a proper answer.

anyhow, that's all I had to say - I just wanted to vent, no one will probably read this anyway.

I hate gender bender fanfics! I feel your pain. They are everywhere now and I just don't understand them at all. Not my cup of tea. Besides I don't read hetro fanfics anymore. I just simply can't. The majority of the fics that I read are gay fics and if I am subscribed to a story with a straight paring, I sure as hell don't read it anymore. I wish there were more lesbian stories on AFF. Good lesbian stories, I mean. That's why I was so happy when I found your taeny fic. I was so happy you don't even know. Keep up the good work!!!!!

PS. I HATE fanfics where guys get pregnant with a burning passion !!!!!!!!

There's also stories where taeyeon (always taeyeon) is based off a stereotypical male character. That's just as bad as genderbender to me. :( I always get annoyed when I find untagged genderbender lol.

I write gender benders but they're still girls just disguised as boys or in one they are actual boys. I write them cos that's what came to mind when I started and also cos I didn't wanna add and actual guy in. Ya know.


Anyways I see it more in taeny whenever I wanna read one that's like the first ones to pop up. Some of them are awesome but sometimes the personality they give the character doesn't match the actual personality to the person ya know?

When suddenly taeng have a , i lose my mood to continue reads. Like i don't know the character anymore.. If she had , why use "she"?. If the character is female but tomboy, she still doesn't have right?

anyway, i hope you got my point..

I've written one gender bender fic (I also write a lot of and just plain old het too) for fun, just to see why people liked to do it (And it was actually kind of fun trying to write a guy having a slightly different mindset, while still having the same personality). (And really, a lot of people end up feminizing some of the males in their fics, so there's really no difference between gender bender and the whole uke/seme thing that some fic writers do.) Not going to lie, but most people automatically think that only certain guys in guy groups can top or bottom, when that really isn't the case. And because of this thinking, a lot of people end up feminizing the man that's the 'uke' of the relationship, which is actually a bit annoying sometimes.

(I'm actually thinking of doing some gender bender with Infinite, girlxgirl pairings though, just to challenge myself by actually writing girlxgirl. But I'm not really huge on girl groups (I like them, but Infinite's my number one group and I like to write Chen a lot to because those people give me enough feels to write about them.), so hence me writing about the guys all the time.

And yes, people can write for fun to try new things and personally I like to write about certain groups and most of these groups are not girl groups so I can either write gen fics, oc/you fics, or fics. And sometimes, I just don't want to create an OC to write a het fic, so hence the gender bender may happen.

And it's not an AFF trend because a lot of the other fandoms I read have quite a bit of genderbend fics as well. It's common in all fandoms, but AFF usually makes it seem worse than it is, because I've read a good amount of genderbender fics for other fandoms and never had a problem because of how well written they were and how they didn't really bastardize the characters by changing their gender.

Plus, most of the authors on this site are girls, so they're more prone to write or het pairings than girlxgirl.

I know a lot a people who bash on girlxgirl and I have even been told that they think girlxgirl is just as bad as . So yeah I mean I have read one or two genderbenders that were not half bad but I didn't love them I would rather read a boyxgirl with OC. But I wouldn't ever be link you can't write this or that because as you said everyone has a right to do whay they want.

Girl, I couldn't agree more. I've even went out of my way to write more girlxgirl fics (that i haven't posted yet) because all I see is genderbender which is really weird to me I guess. I hate clicking on a story that sounds nice and then all of a sudden it's like "Taeng." or something. Genderbender should have it's own category or AT LEAST for the sake of us who want to read a girlxgirl story about their GIRLXGIRL ship put genderbender in the ing tags. I'm so annoyed i don't even look for fics on here anymore. Why ship two girls if you're gonna be like that anyways? So ing stupid.

AGREE! i think mb writing girlxgirl is more challenging than boyxgirl fic?..coz dat kind of r/s more acceptable so they dont hav 2 make a drama about society & all.. not 2 mention mb 4 them it was easier 2 make the pairing hav kids since the 'guy' (--__--) got s tsk.. but seriously, didnt dis kind of thing dat make their fic more interesting?
i admit dat im also read genderbender (just 4 the lol), but if the author out there keep throw us the genderbender thingy better not shipping them with one another, u got suju, exo etc out there authors..stop it coz in the end, it just making me quite cringe >__<
