Genetic Engineering
Question:
In the 1990s large crops of cotton plant were destroyed by the bollworm moth. The pesticides used to kill the moth were expensive and very poisonous, resulting in deaths to humans. Scientist investigated alternative ways to control the bollworm moth. They found out that a type of bacteria produces a poison which can kill the bollworm larvae (grubs). A GM cotton crop plant was developed which produced the same poison to kill bollworms. This proved very effective, and as a result farmers were able to stop using pesticides sprays. The GM cotton was genetically engineered to produce the same poison as the bacterium. Describe fully how this is done. (6 Marks)
