First Day

Jimin looked at his mother, carefully masking his turmoil of emotions and gave her another smile.

‘It wasn’t much of a nightmare mom, it just...felt too real. You really don’t have to look so concerned I am used to it now.’

His answer bothered her even more as it was hurtful to think that Jimin considered having night terrors as something he could get used to.

Jimin didn’t want to let his mother know how terrified he was but secretly wished that she would read though his lies that he was feeding her anyways because he really wanted to tell her that this time...that this time it was different and his dream felt more real than the reality in front of his eyes. He still wasn’t sure if he was awake or just hallucinating. Maybe, he had really drowned and this was the last thread of sanity that his mind was holding onto. If it was he didn’t want to debate, it was better to think that he was still alive and having another normal day, well as normal as it gets.

The only reason he held back from letting his mother know was because he knew how disturbed she will be if she came to know and it was the last thing he wanted, his mother fretting over him.

If only I earned a penny for all my nightmares I would be richer than my dad.

Jimin snickered internally as the thought crossed his mind.

Trying to avoid any more prying questions from his mother he hastily tried to push himself up from the awkward position that he had tumbled into. Instead he landed hard on his again as the blanket tugged at his torso wrapped around him like a huge snake, the mere thought made him shudder. He definitely didn’t like snakes, snakes were bad news.

He heard a soft chuckle as his mother couldn’t help but smile at his antics. As he struggled more and more trying to free him himself from the evil blanket that refused to let go only to get more tangled in the confines of the stupid piece of fabric, his mother broke into a full blown laughter.

Jimin rolled his eyes as he watched his mother laughing at his desperation, in the end he couldn’t help but break into fits of giggles himself. At last he was able to ditch the blanket swearing never to sleep with that diabolic object ever again.

Looking much at ease his mother walked out of his room telling him to get ready or he will be late for his first day in school.

Jimin looked at the time and squeaked in surprise as he had only an hour left before his classes started. He definitely didn’t want to be late for his first day.

Their family had recently shifted from the Park mansion to another larger mansion. It had more of a country-side-house look to it, courtesy of his mother. The new house was far from his previous school so he had decided to change schools, not that he minded, if anything he was relieved.

In his previous school everyone knew who he was. He had always hated when people had judged him because of his father’s money and had tried to warm up to him just because it. He had never been able to make any real friends more like he never had the chance. The good ones shied away from him and the genuine ones could never last for long because of the ‘nasties’ that surrounded him.

This time he wanted to change that firmly deciding to keep his family reputation a secret and had given strict instructions to his parents to do the same to which his parents had willingly obliged.

He quickly finished taking his shower washing away all traces of the morning drama replaced by a nervousness that he associated with his first day at school. He wasn’t that great at socializing even though with his current status it seemed like a ridiculous trait but he had always been a person who liked to keep to himself. He was the rebel of the family.

With just thirty minutes left for his class to start Jimin mindlessly picked out a pair of ripped jeans and a red oversized sweater. He dried his hair and tried to tame the few obstinate strands that refused to settle down, unable to do so he chose a black beanie and covered his head, combing out his bangs with his fingers. He picked up a pair of large thick black rimmed glasses settling them on his nose. He wasn’t a very big fan of glasses but he had poor eyesight and of course his usual destructive alter ego had managed to squish the last pair of the 23 pairs of lenses he owned into oblivion after accidentally stepping on it the night before. How he had managed such a feat was still a mystery to him.

He took a swift look at his reflection in the mirror and knew immediately that his first day wasn’t going to be a smooth one; he looked like a dork in other words an easy target. Dismissing the thought away as he didn’t want to waste anymore time in choosing a better outfit, he grabbed the pair of clean socks sitting on his chair and his bag as he half jumped and half danced towards the dining room running while trying to put on his socks at the same time.

He hurtled through the hallway leading to the dining room nearly dashing into the butler, Jin Young. Even though JinYoung was his family butler after replacing his father who had worked for their family for years, he was more like an elder brother to Jimin.

“Dhoryeonnim! Take it easy,” Jin Young said as he steadied Jimin with a hand on his shoulder cracking a smile as Jimin struggled to pull his second socks up his feet. After successfully wearing his socks he gave Jin Young a displeased look.

“Hyung! How many times have I asked you not to call me by that ridiculous title? I am not young master. I am Jimin, your younger brother not anyone’s master.”

Jimin complained.

“Okay Jiminah, as you wish,” Jin Young patted the younger’s head snickering at Jimin’s annoyance which had now melted into a happy eye smile.

“By the way aren’t you getting late Jiminah?” Jin Young asked quizzically looking at the watch on his hand. Jimin looked at the time and sprinted towards the dining room after giving a tight hug to his hyung.

Jimin looked at the extravagant display of breakfast that was decorated on the table ranging from congee, seolleongtang, juk, bread and cheese, fruits and a lot more things that he didn’t have even the time to look at. He quickly scanned for the easiest food and settled for bread and cheese and a glass of orange juice gulping it down so fast that his throat hurt.

“Eat slowly Jiminah!” Jae Hwa rebuked Jimin as she entered with some new dish on her hand for the breakfast table. “You don’t want to get indigestion on your first day of school now, do you?”

“Eat a little bit more Park Jimin, breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” Jae Hwa continued finishing along with Jimin who now well versed with his mother’s daily dose of advice had chimed in along with her in the last phrase. Jae Hwa gave him a fake scandalised look and shook her head as she saw Jimin swallow the last piece of bread with the his orange juice.

“I know mom, but I am really getting late. I will grab something from the school cafeteria.” Jimin gave a small peck on Jae Hwa’s cheek before flying out of the house.

She sighed as she looked at the retreating figure of her son practically banging the door open whishing that he had eaten more.

Jimin could have taken the car which would have been much faster something he usually did in his previous school but this time he was adamant. He wanted to live an ordinary life like any other middle class family kid. So, he chose the most mundane form of transport to take him to school. As he stumbled down the stairs quickly steadying himself at the last step by the railing he spotted his cycle which was clean and ready held by Yeon Bum. Yeon Bum was his personal bodyguard something he still found amusing.

He grabbed the handle of the cycle and broke into a run, after gaining a suitable momentum he kept his left feet on one of the peddle and swung his right leg over the seat. He cycled without bothering to sit.

He was most relaxed and calm when he cycled. Cycling was something that his elder brother Jihyun had taught him, after which they had spent hours cycling in their free times or when either of them was feeling low. He could always hear his brother’s carefree laughter resonating in his head whenever he cycled.

He missed Jihyun, something that he dare not acknowledge in front of his brother. Before moving out of the Park mansion his brother announced that he was ready to work at the Seoul branch of their company as an intern, to which their father had literally swollen up with pride and had not hesitated even for a second before calling at the company to set it up. Unfortunately this meant he wouldn’t come with them as the company building was way far from their new house. Jihyun had insisted that he wanted equal treatment thus deciding to live in the quarters provided by the company to all the other interns. He had packed his bag and had left on the same day that they had shifted.

He was upset and was pouting in his hyung’s room as he watched his brother pack in dismay.

“Did you really have to go now?” Jimin interjected in a dejected tone, his eyes trailing his brother’s back and forth movement across the room as he started piling a mountain of clothes over his suitcase.

“Minnie, you know that it’s something I have been meaning to ask dad for a long time. I just wanted to be fully ready before I took on any responsibility,” Jihyun stated looking at him with a tight smile. He knew that Jihyun was not telling the complete truth.

“But hyung, why now? We will be shifting to a new house and a new place. I will be so bored.” He whined trying to convince his brother by giving him his best puppy face.

“You will make new friends Minnie and as for being bored it’s a new place and definitely big, you can always go explore it.” Jihyun didn’t even look at him while replying too engrossed in deciding between the two shirts that he was holding, in the end dumping both of them in the suitcase.

“Friends,” Jimin scoffed “yeah like that is happening any sooner. I would be lucky if anyone even looked at me”.

“Hyung...” Jimin started to complain again only to stop after looking at his brother who was finally looking back at him with an expression he couldn’t decipher, was it desperation, annoyance or something else altogether.

“Minnie look I understand it’s a whole new place and a new start for you but this is my dream we are talking about. Do you want me to give up on my dream just because you can’t handle a little boredom! It’s your problem that you can’t make any friends not mine. Grow up and stop whining. You sound like a two year old throwing a fit just because you couldn’t get your favourite lollipop. Now get out of my room and let me pack in some peace. ” the last bit coming out almost like a scream, Jihyun’s harsh words cut though like the edge of a sharp knife.

This almost made him tear up as he felt the humiliation rise up his cheeks. After that he had stormed out of his brother’s room with all his anger buried not letting any of it spill from his eyes. Even though he knew he was at fault his brother could have put it in a better way rather than humiliating him.

That was the last conversation he had with his brother. He was so offended that he had refused to meet his brother before he left. He knew he would regret it later, which he did but at that time his anger had the better of him clouding rational judgement. Though he didn’t understand the reason for his brother’s outburst, he did get this much out of the conversation and that whatever the reason for his brother’s decision it was not because of his dreams. There was definitely something that his brother was hiding.

Jimin cycled furiously as the argument played like a live movie in his mind making him angry and yet remorseful.

“You have reached your destination,” Siri announced. Jimin came to an abrupt halt nearly flying out of his cycle as Siri’s words registered in his mind.

Jimin was now standing right in front of the gate of the school.

A fresh start...
