It’s too hot for this nonsense. Joohyun can feel the heat beating through her hat, toasting her hair. On a day like this, she’s probably going to burn, which will result in her mother scolding her not because she will get burned, but because she will get dark. On top of that, Seulgi is going to get twice as dark as her, which will make her even angrier.
After a 2 hour match, Joohyun’s energy and attention are waning. She wants nothing more than the aircon, a glass of water, and her bedsheets. She’s exhausted mentally and physically.
The ball goes up into the air and Joohyun watches the body language of the server. At this point she knows she’s distracted because she’s not staring at the body language so much as the body. Because Son Seungwan in a pleated skirt shows off her toned thighs and shapely and with her arms up in the air, her top is lifted up to reveal her very strong abs, and her arms–they come down fast and the racquet makes contact with the ball in a ricocheting smack.
Joohyun curses because the ball is coming at her and her feet are firmly planted on the ground like lead weights have been put on them. And Seungwan hits it right into the middle and luckily it comes right at Joohyun. It’s not a pretty return because she’s been working on a new backhand, but it’s enough to get it back over the net.
It forces Seulgi to step back because when Sooyoung returns it, she’s mean. Sooyoung smacks it right at Seulgi’s chest and Seulgi manages to lob it away but that means it drops behind Sooyoung to go to Seungwan again. Joohyun really can’t do this at the moment because rallying with Seungwan is supposed to be fun and carefree. She can’t be like that when they’re competing. And they’ve been in this match for too long, it needs to end. They’re all tired and Sooyoung is pissing her off for picking on Seulgi.
Joohyun returns it and watches as Sooyoung gets out of Seungwan’s way. And Seungwan is the only one that doesn’t hesitate to return the ball. They’ve run into each other late at night plenty of times. Instead of hitting it against a wall, Joohyun has someone to rally with and work on her game with and talk with and share music with and eat ice cream with and kiss in the back seat of her car late in the middle of the night.
Despite the heat and exhaustion, they forget they’re in a match for a brief time. They’re rallying like in practice. Their rhythm of keeping the ball in the court is quick but out of pocket for their partners to volley. Joohyun doesn’t care but she just focuses on Seungwan. The way Seungwan bites her bottom lip as she hits the ball back and the way her quads and hamstrings tighten as she runs.
God, she’s so beautiful.
SMACK
Their rally is broken by Sooyoung interjecting with an aggressive volley. It happens so quickly that Seulgi barely has time to get the racquet up to protect her face and the ball comes full speed and slaps her so hard, she gets knocked back. And then immediately falls onto the ground painfully.
“Seulgi!” Joohyun screeches as she goes to her sister.
The situation turns from bad to worse because there’s a stream of blood flowing from Seulgi’s nose as she groans painfully on the ground.
Sooyoung jumps over the net and tries to come to Seulgi’s aid.
“Get away from her!” Joohyun instinctively pushes her long-time rival from Seulgi. Sooyoung has had a habit of bullying her on the courts while bullying Seulgi off the courts, so Joohyun has a very short fuse when it comes to the giant junior. She protectively lifts Seulgi into her arms and despite being a few centimetres shorter, Joohyun is strong enough to do it anyway.
Joohyun carries Seulgi to the benches and waits for her coach to come check on them. There’s a
