"He was called the Morning Star,
and she, his Evening Light.
Doomed their love from the very start
unable to meet in the same sky.
He sought her trust,
she sought his affection,
but played a traitorous game.
So his Evening Light was left to dim,
and the Morning Star to blame."
"So what happened to them?" she asked as she her side, propping her head up with her right arm, elbow pressed firmly against the blanket covering the grass beneath them. Though the poem had sounded like it had ended, for some reason she knew better than to think that way. So she gazed at him expectantly, as if he held all the answers of the universe.
He flashed his crooked smile, white teeth blinding, and leaned into the girl with the child-like facial features and contradicting womanly figure. He brushed his lips against hers and brought his hand up to cup her face. She closed her eyes and gave in to the kiss, falling back down to lay her back against the blanket so that he could place himself over her.
Her long raven hair splayed across the white blanket, which looked like snow against the freshly cut grass of the meadow the two had found themselves in. It was night and the position of the moon was it's the highest point in the sky, shining down on them like a spotlight. He pressed his body flush against hers, allowing her to feel his chest rising and falling in time with her own.
Her heart raced and she struggled to breathe, her body filling up with a strange kind of anxiety she had never felt before. So she pulled herself up against him, never breaking the kiss, and he pressed himself further into her. It was almost like they weren't close enough. Like she needed to feel herself melding with him. She couldn't breathe, and her head was spinning like mad.
Why was she becoming so light-headed and so out of breath all of a sudden? They were just making out. But why did it feel like her heart would beat right out of her chest at any moment? Like her lungs were on the verge of collapsing? As if she needed to be one with him? ]
And then it hit her.
It hit her hard. Like an irrational kind of fear, the kind that lingered in the back of her mind until it wasn't. Like it came from nowhere but really didn't.
You know what happened, she heard him whisper in her head.
Who was he?
She had only ever seen him in her dreams but knew nothing of him. Who was this man and did he even exist?
And only then did it occur to her: Was this all a dream?
But it felt so real.
She stiffened and slowly moved back when she felt him suddenly stop. Something about his aura had changed and she was hesitating on whether or not she should open her eyes.
She took a breath and tried to compose herself. Her heart was finally slowing down to a normal pace and her body temperature was going back to normal. Her breathing had steadied and without his presence, she felt more like herself. Like she didn't need him for her to exist.
Fearing the worst still as an eerie calm settled, she opened her eyes.
