“I thought there are just you and me.

I thought we only need each other.”

 – Junhong –

Present time

It’s not even noon yet but Yongguk got home early for lunch. He parked his car in the driveway, leaving his briefcase and suit jacket in there before going inside his house. The door was slowly pushed opened so that no sounds were made and he started to walk on his toes to the kitchen. Daehyun was probably making lunch right now but he wasn’t eager to eat those delicious dishes. He’s impatient to see the cook instead.

Yongguk stopped to sneak a peek into the kitchen. Daehyun was stirring something at the countertop with his small back facing the entrance. A smile grew on his lips as he quietly made his way to the other, giving his housekeeper a little surprise by a back hug.

Daehyun gasped when a pair of arms suddenly wrapped around his waist, and also because a bit of his mix spilled out of the bowl. He tried to turn but the culprit was persistent in dabbing kisses on his neck. His head tilted to the side because it tickled him.

“What’re you doing? I’ve got something to cook,” Daehyun made an attempt to squirm out of the embrace only to be squeezed harder by the taller man.

“But I missed you,” Yongguk almost whined like a kid. He finally captured Daehyun’s lips with his, causing the latter to chuckle at his childish act. He took the bowl and spoon from Daehyun to put them down. His hands were placed on the slender waist again before turning the whole body to face him.

Daehyun did nothing except letting the older claimed his lips once more. His eyelids dropped shut, taking in the pleasure Yongguk was giving him by his mouth. His hands were gripping on Yongguk’s shirt as the man nudged his lower back to the countertop and deepened their kiss. They’re slightly panting after pulling apart, foreheads pressed against each other.

Yongguk then lifted Daehyun by his hip and put him to sit on the countertop. The younger only let out a soft yelp at the sudden move. Yongguk came to stand in between Daehyun’s legs, taking Daehyun’s arms to put around his neck as he intertwined his fingers behind the smaller man.

“You know,” Yongguk began, looking straight into Daehyun’s eyes and got a questioning raised of eyebrows in return. “I’ve been wondering, why exactly did you leave me back then?”

Daehyun totally didn’t expect that coming, not when they’re having their moment just now. He bit his lip in hesitation, his thumbs nervously rubbing the skin of Yongguk’s neck. “You won’t get mad now, right?”

“No I won’t,” Yongguk retorted immediately. “You already said you’re sorry and I forgave you.”

Daehyun nodded because he believed in the other’s words. His eyes lowered for him to take a deep breath before connecting with Yongguk’s again. “I actually got pregnant that time,” He blurted frankly.

The calm expression of Yongguk slowly turned into a frown. “Pregnant? With Junhong?” It was not much of a surprise for him since he kind of had a guess about it. It made sense since Junhong was almost fifteen years old and if he counted backwards, it’s around the time when they separated.

Daehyun only nodded his head as a response. He was looking at his lap instead of Yongguk’s face.

“So… Seunghyun got you pregnant,” Yongguk’s question was more like a statement. His tone didn’t sound angry at all. That made the younger relaxed a bit.

Daehyun sighed, bringing down his hands from Yongguk’s neck and started playing with his fingers. There’s no need to hide anything now. Everything that happened was in the past. It didn’t matter anymore since Yongguk had returned to his side.

“Right after he found out about us… he forced me to do it, saying I only belong to him or something…” Daehyun muttered with a trembling voice. “It’s really hard for me…” His throat was suddenly dry and Yongguk quickly his back.

“I was so angry at him for being so careless,” He continued. “When he told me to abort it, I realized I couldn’t do that. It’s my own child…”

“Why didn’t you tell me?” Yongguk asked carefully.

Daehyun shook his head. “I don’t know… I was so scared. I was afraid you’d leave me because I still had with Seunghyun after going out with you…” His words were gradually turning into whimpers.

“And you decided to leave me instead?”

Daehyun jerked his head up at that. “Believe me, I really didn’t want to leave you,” He stared at Yongguk through glassy eyes. “But I just had to tell my parents about the baby and they took the news badly since Seunghyun’s the father. I had to leave the house if I didn’t want to lose the baby. Seunghyun was just being responsible by running away with me,” He earnestly explained, hoping that the older man wasn’t having the wrong idea about him.

Yongguk couldn’t help but to smile at Daehyun’s anxiousness. “I’m sorry for having a thought that you chose that guy over me.”

“You know I would never do that…”

“Well, it made sense. He’s rich compared to me. So that’s why I worked my way up here,” Yongguk quipped, causing Daehyun to smile again.

“I was wondering,” Daehyun used the same way to approach Yongguk. His gaze trailed down to Yongguk’s white shirt before he loosened the black tie. “How did you become like this?”

“I was going to tell you back then but I missed the only perfect time to do it. I got adopted.”

Daehyun’s eyes doubled in size at the shocking news. “Really?”

“They’re a married couple and they still didn’t have a child after twelve years. So they took me in. My dad started his own company and it grew to a huge success. They needed an heir. I began to work there after graduating from university at 23 and became the CEO at 27.  Everyone calls me Mr. Park at the office though I never changed my surname,” Yongguk let out a small laugh when he imagined that. “My mom’s the president now since dad passed away five years ago… It’s such an honor for me to carry his family name,” He finished with a thin satisfied smile.

“I’m so sorry to hear that,” Daehyun softly caressed Yongguk’s cheek.

“I love him even though he got to be my dad for a short time. He’s the one who told me to never lose hope one you,” Yongguk stared into Daehyun’s eyes, feeling grateful in every breath he took for listening to his adoptive father.

Their lips connected again. The hard times they went through those past fifteen years without each other flashed across their minds as they closed their eyes. And when they’re opened to the face of the person they loved, those times were just like a dream.

“I have something to show you,” Yongguk said, untying Daehyun’s apron before taking it off. The younger jumped down from the counter, his hand in Yongguk’s grasp as he was leisurely led to upstairs where he never set foot in.

They walked past the first door but stopped at the second one. Yongguk opened it and pulled Daehyun in. The room was huge. It even had an attached bathroom. Daehyun was sure it’s Yongguk’s bedroom since there’s a king sized bed in the corner. But his room was too messy with paperwork scattered on the table, floor, shelf, and even the bed. Maybe this was why Yongguk never told him to clean up his room which he made like his home office or everything would get even messier.

“Wait here,” Yongguk brought Daehyun to the bed before going to his walk-in closet.

Daehyun just patiently waited while looking around the room until Yongguk came back with a medium sized chest. The older man sat facing the other with one leg folded on the bed and Daehyun copied his act. The chest was placed before them, receiving a curious look from Daehyun.

                “Open it,” Yongguk urged.

Daehyun glanced at Yongguk for confirmation and the said guy just nodded towards the chest. Daehyun’s attention returned to the wooden box again. Slowly, he pulled the latch before lifting the cover. What he saw was all familiar to him; the colourful small papers and the cursive but neat handwriting.

There, gathered in the chest, was a bundle of sticky notes with short messages written on them which Daehyun knew too well were directed at him based on the salutation used; dear sunshine. Above them all was the one Yongguk left in the kitchen recently. His slightly shaking hand took out that note before digging in further into the chest. He read them one by one, each of them saying that he missed him, he loved him, or both of them.

“I wrote them almost everyday since the day you left me,” Yongguk spoke up. “There’re a lot more in my closet.”

With that, Daehyun broke into a fit of crying. The tears dropped onto the notes, causing the ink to disperse over the wet papers. He never had a thought of Yongguk doing this kind of thing because of him. Yongguk was too faithful to love him that much for that long. He would be so stupid to let go of this precious person again.

The chest was pushed aside and Yongguk shifted closer to Daehyun. He held the sobbing man in his embrace, running his fingers through the sleek hair to soothe Daehyun’s mixed feelings.

“I love you,” Daehyun whispered near Yongguk’s ear as he tightly hugged the other body.

Yongguk pulled away to show his happy grin to the younger. “I have always loved you.”

Daehyun wailed louder. His heart squeezed at Yongguk’s words. He’s too happy, he loved this man too much that he could only express it through crying his heart out.

Yongguk chuckled, thumbs wiping Daehyun’s tears off the beautiful face. “Yah, can't you at least smile when I said that? It looked like I just broke up with you,” He pinched Daehyun’s soft cheeks to pull them up, causing Daehyun to look like he was smiling.

It succeeded in making Daehyun laughed. He placed his hands over Yongguk’s, gazing at the man with his teary eye smiles. Yongguk’s heart pounded at the rare but familiar sight. He consequently brought their faces closer for another kiss.

Eventually, things became heated between them. Daehyun had stopped crying but Yongguk didn’t seem ready to let go of those luscious lips. He wanted more and more and he subconsciously had pushed Daehyun’s body to lie on the bed. Realizing what Yongguk was about to do to him, Daehyun created a gap between them with his hands pressed on Yongguk’s chest.

“You need to return to work later and I haven’t finished making lunch yet.”

Yongguk who was hovering over the latter snorted as he found it funny. “You know that I’m the CEO, right?”

“But I have works to do too,” Daehyun wasn’t intending to do it but he was actually pouting.

Yongguk smirked at the cute sight. “And who do you work for?”

Daehyun’s brows furrowed at the ridiculous question. “You…?”

“So you need to listen to me.”

“Oh my god,” Daehyun suddenly sat up, pushing Yongguk off of him in the process. “You really shouldn’t come home during lunch. You’ll slack off and wasting time to go back and forth to work. You should really finish your work and come home early for dinner instead,” He nagged seriously at the supposed to be his boss.

“Hmm, you’re right,” Yongguk rubbed his chin as he sat next to Daehyun. “Then, I should have dinner at your home instead,” He suggested out of the blue. “You wouldn’t need to cook two times for me and Junhong or bring home the dishes from here.”

Daehyun’s eyes went wide again. “You’re saying you want to go to my apartment for dinner? Today?”

“Can’t I?” Yongguk sounded dejected while having a sad face.

It’s not like Daehyun wanted to refuse but he wasn’t so sure about Junhong. His son didn’t seem to take a liking on Yongguk. They didn’t even talk much since Junhong left the kitchen the other day. “O-of course you can…” He agreed, just didn’t want to disappoint the man he loved. He guessed he would talk this out with his son later.

“Good,” Yongguk said before leaning closer to Daehyun. “Now, where were we?”

Daehyun had just finished cooking dinner when Junhong arrived home. Yongguk drove him to the supermarket after they’re done making love to each other, paid for the ingredients he picked and sent him home before returning to the company.

Junhong looked confused when he saw his mother in the kitchen. “You’re home early today,” He noted as he went to get a drink from the fridge to quench his thirst after tired of walking home from school.

Daehyun eyed his son from the end of the table where he was standing at. Heaving a deep breath, he called the boy. “Junhong?”

Closing the door of the refrigerator, the boy turned to his mother while holding a glass of water.

“We have a guest today,” Daehyun told straightforwardly.

                Junhong frowned. “Guest? Who?”

                “Bang Yongguk-ssi.”

Junhong scoffed loudly. “Eomma,” He stared at Daehyun in disbelief. “Seriously?”

Daehyun had no time to answer when the doorbell rang. “He’s here,” He glanced at the door before looking at his son again. “Wait here and please, behave,” He gave a stern order and proceeded to get the door.

Junhong’s jaw clenched to hold his irritation. He slammed the now empty glass onto the table to remove his backpack. He had no choice but to obey his mother so he sat at the dining table with an overloaded annoying feeling.

Shortly, he saw his mother led another man to the dining table, telling the guest to have a seat across him. The man in suit had his eyes set on him as soon as he stepped into the kitchen, with a sickening broad grin on his face.

“Evening,” Still standing, Yongguk greeted the grumpy teenager. “I brought ice cream cake for dessert,” He waved the plastic bag containing a large box in front of the boy as if it could triggered his interest.

Anyhow, Junhong didn’t bother to response. Hearing that deep voice in a sweet tone was getting him even more irritated. Yongguk’s face changed looking at Junhong’s glowering one.

“Thank you,” Daehyun jumped in and took the cake box instead when he noticed his son being rude. “Have a seat while I set up the table.”

Yongguk nodded. He took off his jacket and hung it around the chair. When he finally sat in front of Daehyun’s son, everything turned awkward. The boy never stopped staring at him and he started to have a feeling that Junhong wasn’t really fond of him. He needed to change that.

“I think we haven’t properly introduced ourselves. I’m Bang Yongguk,” He smiled genuinely.

“I know,” was Junhong’s monotone retort.

“Junhong…” Daehyun hissed as he placed the dishes on the table.

The boy rolled his eyes. “You heard that. I’m Junhong.”

“Just Junhong…?” Yongguk asked to carry on their conversation.

However, Junhong ignored that. He began to put the dishes in his plate after his mother took a seat at the other side of the small table.

“He doesn’t really like to mention his surname,” Daehyun answered in his son’s behalf.

                “Eomma,” Junhong murmured angrily.

Daehyun showed his palms like he didn’t do anything wrong. He didn’t go as far as telling their guest that Junhong’s surname was Choi because the boy hated that the most. Not that it really mattered since Yongguk already knew about it.

After a minute of glaring at each other, Junhong returned to consume his meal. Daehyun served his guest by putting the dishes into the plate while Yongguk kept watching the other two, wondering if they’re having an argument before. Maybe he chose the wrong time to come here.

They were eating in silence. Yongguk was uneasy. He felt the need to do something to lighten up the atmosphere. Since he’s already here, why not use the chance to get to know Daehyun’s son better?

“So, how’re you doing in school?” He cautiously asked the boy. But he didn’t expect the latter to put down his chopsticks and stared at him again. Daehyun looked up quizzically at his son.

“Just tell me frankly,” Junhong began, alternating his suspicious gaze between Yongguk and Daehyun. “Are you two in a relationship?”

Both Yongguk and Daehyun dropped their jaws. They slowly turned to look at each other. By this time, they could only read each other’s minds. Junhong’s question made them totally dumbfounded.

Daehyun agitatedly turned back to his son, telling the truth was better than lying. “I-I… I’m planning to tell you soon… just waiting for the right time to-” He flinched when the boy suddenly stood up, the chair making a loud scraping noise.

“I can’t take this anymore,” Junhong shook his head and quickly left the apartment without sparing a second look at his mother.

Daehyun helplessly started to cry. His head lowered to hide his face from the other man. He’s angry, he’s embarrassed, he’s frustrated with his son’s attitude towards Yongguk. He loved both of them and he really wished his son would accept his relationship with Yongguk. He wanted them to get along. But why did Junhong just have to not make that happen?

Yongguk was still pretty shocked from the previous incident. He just realized that Daehyun and Junhong were actually having an argument because of him. He couldn’t help but to feel guilty over it. He pulled his chair closer to Daehyun’s before engulfing the crying man in his arms as he was tongue tied to say anything. Comforting Daehyun was all he could do for now.

After twenty minutes of riding a bus and five minutes of walking, Junhong finally reached Jongup’s house. If it’s not being alone in the apartment’s balcony, being with Jongup was what he would do when he’s having a problem. He knew it. His mother must’ve had a thing with that wealthy guy since he never brought another man home before. And the thought made him seethed with anger, moreover when that man was very rich.

“Junhong? What are you doing here?” Jongup’s mother opened the door after a few knocks. Donghae peered outside to see if there’s anyone else with the boy. “Did you come alone? At this time? Don’t tell me you have another fight with your mother.”

Junhong huffed and left the question unanswered. “Is Jongup hyung home?”

“He goes out to convenience store after dinner. You want to come in?” Donghae stepped aside to welcome the boy.

“Sure,” Junhong casually made his way into the house. “Where’s uncle Hyukjae?” He asked while walking to the living room.

“He’s probably taking a bath,” Donghae sat on the sofa adjacent to the other Junhong was sitting on. He studied the boy’s sulky act, biting his lips as he toyed with the hem of his shirt. He waited for him to say something but of course, Junhong only shared his feelings with Jongup. That’s why he’s here in the first place.

“Why don’t you talk to me about it?” Donghae tried to console.

Junhong looked up at the older man. He wondered if he should tell him about it. But Donghae was intently gazing at him, like he wanted to sincerely help. Junhong sighed. Maybe the adults were better at handling this kind of thing.

“Eomma invited a man for dinner…” He uttered, staring down at his lap.

Donghae’s eyes widened. “Really?” He asked in surprise.

“I know,” Junhong said because he was initially pretty shocked too. “He has never ever done that before. Ever. I don’t know why but I’m… I’m angry…”

                “And why is that?”

“They’re in a relationship and I thought… eomma needs no one else except me…”

When Junhong admitted that, Donghae knew this boy had completely misunderstood. Junhong was feeling unwanted, jealous and afraid if his mother was seized by another man and forgot about him. Donghae needed to let this boy knew it was nothing like those. This was the first time in ten years Daehyun was dating another man. And he’s sure that man meant something for Daehyun.

Getting up from his spot, Donghae moved to sit beside Junhong, wrapping an arm around the boy in a side hug. “We always know you’re everything for your mother. Nothing’s gonna change that.”

Junhong didn’t say anything. He just kept his eyes downcast. Donghae withdrew his arm, his posture mirrored the boy.

“I remember when Daehyun and your father moved out from here. You’re barely two years old. And Daehyun would send you here every morning, asking me to help taking care of you while he went to work. From dawn to dusk. He changed job countless times in a year. He did at least three different jobs that time, just to make sure his son was full. He’d give me money by the end of the month but I could never accept it. I told him he needed it more than me and I always considered you as my own son, Jongup’s little brother,” Donghae smiled, turning to see Junhong already looking attentively at him.

“He cried. He always cried. His eyes were always wet with tears,” Donghae turned his face back to the front. “Around a year after that, I could see cuts and bruises on his face when he came to pick you up. A few weeks later, they’re replaced by new ones. He wouldn't tell me when I ask why. And I just kept on asking until he finally told me. But all I could do was telling him that everything will be okay.”

Donghae breathed out before looking at Junhong again. “You see, if you cry, your mother would always be there to comfort you, to wipe your tears away. But when he cried, he cried alone. He has nobody to relieve his sadness, to rest his head against a shoulder, someone to lean on.”

Junhong averted his eyes to the ground, sinking his mind into a deep thought.

“Remember what I said to you when your mother decided to run away from your father? Listen to your eomma. Make him happy,” Donghae patted Junhong’s back. “He has done everything for you. He suffered a lot throughout his life. Can’t you just let him be happy with the man he loves? Just this once.”

Junhong blew out a puff of air. He rubbed his face with his hands and they stayed there, hiding his newly formed tears from Donghae whom he always regarded as his second mother. But the older man knew better. So he pulled the boy into a warm hug.

“I’m afraid if eomma would get hurt again,” Junhong muttered quietly into Donghae’s chest.

                “You wouldn’t know that.”

###

It’s almost midnight but Junhong wasn’t home yet. Yongguk had left long ago and Daehyun was fidgeting on the couch alone as he waited for his son to come home. He had called Donghae an hour ago and he was told that Junhong already left there to go home. He’s really worried now because his son took so long. Maybe he should give a mobile phone earlier than he planned so that he could contact the boy at times like this.

Daehyun’s head jerked up when he heard knocks on the door. Without thinking much, he got up to open it, forgetting the fact that if it’s Junhong, the boy would never knock. He always brought the key everywhere he went.

The door was opened to a tall man. But it wasn’t Junhong. Daehyun was in extreme shock. He could only gape at the man clad in all black, smoking a cigarette with a cap hiding half of his face. He suddenly regretted opening the door without any doubt.

“Hy-Hyu-ung…?” Daehyun stammered, feeling his whole body went limp.

The man dropped his cigarette to the ground before stamping his foot on it. Only then he looked up at Daehyun with a smirk. “Long time no see.”

I remember a long time ago when I received your heart

You were overflowing to me and I’m thankful

I think of those times

We loved each other, we were at our happiest

Then we came across farewell and you were overflowing

I'm sorry

I can't hold you back

And can you smile?

You want this, you hope for this

With only my heart, I can't seem to have you
