Hallyu Wave

I was doing homework today for my creative writing class.  One of the poems I had to write needed to be about pop culture.  This is what I wrote, and I kinda liked it so I thought I'd share :)

Hallyu Wave

Four Polish girls

Line the edge of a double bed

In a dingy Paris motel room,

Blowing up balloons in colors that match

The t-shirts pulled tightly over their

Youthful blossoming chests.

Three Thai girls

Doze in worn sleeping bags

In front of a venue in Singapore,

Clutching their tickets tightly in their fists

And singing to each other in

A language they don’t understand.

Two African American girls

Hurry off a Nashville plane

And into the smog of Los Angeles.

They chatter as they wait for their luggage

Before breaking out into a series of

Perfectly synchronized dance moves.

And I, alone, in the late evening hours

Bear witness to all of this

Thanks to the invention of YouTube.

I am fascinated and enthralled

As I marvel at how united to one purpose

These beings called “fans” have become.

How they’ve come in droves to stand at the feet

Of the pretty teenager from Busan, South Korea

And his 4 adopted brothers, who hide themselves

Beneath a thick layer of BB Cream, tight cloths and silver jewelry.

Smoky charcoal rings their bright black eyes

As they sing and dance in an explosion of glittery glory.

And I wonder at the shrinking world and the universal nature of beauty.
