Monster Sweater
The Ink Slinger's Diary (Seulrene Drabble Collection)Kang Seulgi has no idea where her head is supposed to go with this sweater. She wasn’t sure if this was a turtleneck sweater or a giraffe sweater -- or worse, she didn’t know if this was a sleeveless sweater or a monster. It wasn’t even cold outside yet, December not inching anywhere near, but Bae Joohyun had jumped into the Christmas spirit filled with glee and determination to make her girlfriend a sweater.
What came out was something that vaguely resembled a sweater. Correction, it was almost like a parody of it.
“Seulgi-yah! Come out,” Joohyun said, curled up in the couch, tired of waiting for Seulgi. But then, she turned to see the poor Seulgi wearing the sweater all wrong. How wrong? Up to your imagination, but certainly we can give Seulgi credit for trying.
The first thing Seulgi heard was laughter coming from the very heart of her girlfriend, a contagious laugh that tickled Seulgi and made her laugh instantly. “Stop! This sweater is confusing!”
Joohyun shook her hands and head. “No, it isn’t!” She tried to get up and was doubled over in hysterics.
“Yah!”
“Your arm is where the neck should be.”
“Excuse me?!”
“The sleeve is going up to your nostrils--.”
“Isn’t this supposed to be a sweater?”
“Yah, it’s not finished!”
“I can tell, unnie!” Now Seulgi wrestled with the sweater, trying to take it off. “Yah, don’t sit there and laugh, help me!”
And of course, in between the fits of cackling and snortles, Joohyun helped the poor Seulgi wiggle out of this amalgamation that Joohyun dared to call a sweater.
Even if she failed at making something for her girlfriend, her intentions were known and palpable. Above all, the laughter and the memories made were far more precious.
