Chapter 13
Baby, We'll Be AlrightDonghae holds their baby girl close to his chest to let her know that she’s being cared for. Her fever is running high, and she is drooling so much. He rocks her and hums a song that has been sitting in his mind for a while, but she is unsettled. Her breathing is shallower than usual, and this worries Donghae. He sent Hyukjae to go get some medicine, but it is late at night, and he hasn’t arrived yet.
“Hey mom, sorry for bothering you so late,” Donghae greets his mother. “Eunhae is really sick...I don’t know what else I can do. She can’t be comforted.”
Understanding and worried for her granddaughter, she tries to brainstorm what could possibly be affecting Eunhae. “What’s happening?”
“She has a fever, and oh my god,” Donghae frets. His eyes scan her small face. “Her nose and mouth is kind of grayish, mom is that normal?”
“Okay, here’s what you do,” his mom calmly instructs. “Go to the bathroom, and turn off the hot water. Close the door, do not vent. The steamed air should help.”
Donghae runs to the bathroom as carefully as he could, and follows his mother’s instruction.
He allows the bathroom to steam, fogging the mirrors and giving the atmosphere a warm and humid feel. He rocks Eunhae, not minding his tired arms.
“It’s okay, baby, you’re alright,” Donghae whispers. “Dad’s with you.”
He sighs a relief when he sees that Eunhae is getting better.
“Hae?” He hears someone call from outside.
“In the bathroom!” Donghae replies, trying not to shout too loud.
The bathroom slightly opens, and Hyukjae steps in, a plastic bag in his hand. He watches Eunhae, his eyebrows creased, and his lips pursed.
“How is she?” Hyukjae whispers.
“She’s getting better,” Donghae assures him. He steps nearer to Hyukjae, and his husband surrounds his arms around him.
Hyukjae leans forward and softly kisses Eunhae on the forehead. Donghae gently passes their baby into Hyukjae’s arms, and then takes the plastic bag he was holding and sits on the closed lid of the toilet.
They take turns until Eunhae’s condition improved. All night, they held her, and kept her warm.
“Hae,” Hyukjae shakes Donghae’s shoulder. His neck is starting to bend in that unnatural way of his, and his eyes are fluttering shut.
Donghae mumbles something and shakes his head, indicating that he’s okay.
“Go to bed,” Hyukjae said. “I’ll take care of Eunhae.”
“You’ll get tired,” Donghae yawns.
Hyukjae smiles and squeezes his shoulder. “I’m good. You go
