Charlie's body felt like lead as she stumbled out of the operating room, her mind struggling to grasp the reality of Leora's death. Without a moment's hesitation, she sought out Dr. Anne, desperate for answers in the face of such unexpected loss.

"Dr. Anne.... w-what happened? I thought Leora was getting better?" Charlie's voice trembled with anguish as she confronted Dr. Anne, her eyes swollen from tears shed in despair.

Dr. Anne's somber gaze spoke volumes as she delivered the painful truth.

"I explained everything to Leora, Charlie. She understood the risks, the slim chance of recovery. She made me promise not to tell you guys about it, and as her doctor, I respected her wishes," Dr. Anne explained softly, her tone weighted with sorrow. "The treatment she endured, it's grueling, especially for an Alpha. But she endured it for you, for all of you guys. She was aware that her recovery was only at 0.01%. You did everything you could, Charlie. You mustn't blame yourself."

With a gentle pat on Charlie's shoulder, Dr. Anne left her to grapple with the weight of loss.

As tears welled up in her eyes once more, Charlie's mind echoed with self-reproach.

'Dr. Anne, you're wrong... There's no one else to blame but me," she thought bitterly, her voice a whisper in the corridors of her mind. "If only, if only I hadn't tried to alter her fate. Leora could have lived out her remaining time in peace, in the happiness she so deserved... But my stubbornness, my selfishness, brought her this suffering.'

As Serena's image materialized in Charlie's thoughts, a pang of realization struck her. Charlie couldn't ignore the parallel between Leora's situation and her attempts to change her fate. She feared that her interventions might bring more harm than good.

'Pattern, there's a pattern that I chose to ignore...' Charlie thought.

'The night at the auction, that night I tried changing Serena's fate by not letting her meet Cato, and then I suffered the consequences. It wasn't an accident... it was a reminder from the creator of this world that I shouldn't interfere with things. And now this... Leora suffered a more painful death...' Charlie's tears started falling again at the thought.

"I must not repeat my mistakes... I can't afford to be selfish again... Before I inflict more suffering on her... Before I shatter her too. Losing her would be unbearable. So, I must find the strength to set her free." Charlie's inner turmoil echoed through the fragments of her shattered heart.

As tears streamed down her cheeks, Charlie ran out of the hospital, unsure of where to go. Her feet ached from the high heels she still wore, a painful reminder of the events that had transpired. The only warmth she felt amid the cool winter night was from the long trench coat that Serena had placed around her shoulders before rushing to the hospital.

Finding herself on the bridge they had often passed on their way to school, Charlie paused and looked up at the stars above.

'Why did you bring me here? If I can't even do anything to change my fate or anyone else's. Why do I have to see everyone I love be taken away from me? What did I do so wrong?' Charlie's voice echoed into the night, as if questioning the universe itself.

Tears flowed down her cheeks, each drop a testament to the anguish in her heart. The cold air bit at her skin, but it was nothing compared to the chill that gripped her soul. She had just lost her best friend, and now she faced the painful reality of letting go of the person she loved most.

Despite the biting cold of the winter night, Charlie began the long walk home. Each step felt heavier than the last, burdened by the weight of her emotions. She dreaded facing Serena, knowing that saying goodbye would be excruciatingly difficult.

'It is because I love you that I must let you go... I'm sorry... I hope you can forgive me,' Charlie's silent plea resonated in her thoughts, a whispered farewell to the love she couldn't keep.

As Charlie stepped into the quiet darkness of her home at 3 am, the weight of the day's events hung heavy on her shoulders. She barely registered the soft glow of the lights emanating from the living room, where Serena and Aunt Carol awaited her with a cake in hand.

"It's a little late, but still, we want to wish you a Happy Birthday," Serena's voice broke through the silence, her smile tinged with sadness.

Charlie managed a weak smile in return, her eyes betraying the turmoil raging within her. "Forgive me if I'm not in the mood to celebrate," she murmured, her voice barely audible as she ascended the stairs, ignoring Serena's attempt to reach out to her.

Aunt Carol stayed behind, understanding the gravity of the situation. She knew that Charlie needed space to grapple with her emotions, but Serena had different plans.

"Charlie... you can talk to me," Serena's gentle voice floated up the staircase, her hand outstretched in a silent plea.

"Sorry, Serena, but I want to be alone," Charlie's words were tinged with a sadness that pierced Serena's heart.

But Serena refused to let Charlie retreat into solitude. With determined resolve, she wrapped her arms around Charlie, offering comfort in the midst of her despair.

"Let me stay with you tonight. You're not alone, I'm here for you." Serena's voice was soft but unwavering, her love shining through even in the darkest of moments.

Charlie's heart ached at Serena's words, knowing the pain she was about to inflict. "Serena, just go... I don't need you... Stay away from me from now on..." she whispered, the weight of her decision heavy on her soul.

Confusion clouded Serena's features, her mind racing to comprehend Charlie's sudden declaration. "What are you talking about, Charlie?" she asked, her voice trembling with uncertainty.

With a heavy heart, Charlie steeled herself for the inevitable. "I'm saying that... we... can't be together anymore. Let's break up." she uttered, each word is so painful to say.

Shock and disbelief washed over Serena's face as Charlie closed the door, leaving her standing alone in the hallway.

The rhythmic sound of Serena's persistent knocks echoed through the quiet hallway.

"No! I'm not breaking up with you! Open this door and let's talk...." Serena's voice pleaded, tinged with desperation.

"Just leave..." Charlie's response was barely above a whisper, her exhaustion palpable even through the closed door.

But Serena refused to yield. "I'm not leaving until you open the door," she declared, her resolve unshakeable.

"I'm tired, Serena. Please... just leave me alone... I'm going to bed now..." Charlie's voice wavered with weariness, her heart heavy with the weight of her decision.

As Serena gazed down at the small hole at the bottom of the door, she caught a glimpse of Charlie's shadow within. It was a fleeting reminder of the pain and turmoil consuming the person she loved, driving her to knock relentlessly, refusing to abandon Charlie in her time of need.

Charlie's heart clenched as she held the jar of forget-me-nots with letters that she was supposed to give to Serena after her birthday, each letter inside a testament to the love she longed to express but now feared to reveal. With trembling hands, she placed the jar in the hidden drawer, a silent acknowledgment of the shattered dreams that now lay dormant within.

"Please open the door..." Serena's voice, filled with desperation, seeped through the cracks, pleading for entrance into Charlie's world.

Torn between the pain of separation and the fear of causing further harm, Charlie's resolve wavered. "Serena, please just... go..." Her voice faltered, betraying the anguish that threatened to consume her.

But Serena remained steadfast.

"I-I'm not leaving until I see you," she declared, her voice a gentle yet insistent melody.

Succumbing to Serena's persistence, Charlie relented, allowing the door to creak open just slightly, a silent invitation into her fractured world.

"Now that you see me, go to sleep now," Charlie whispered, her words a fragile attempt to shield Serena from the storm raging within her own heart.

But Serena refused to heed her plea, pushing the door open and enveloping Charlie in a tight embrace. In that moment, Charlie found solace in the warmth of Serena's embrace, the
