Tao's POV

'It's so cold, and wet. It smells bad and I can't seem to get comfortable. Oh well, it's better than being with the bad man. He tells me he's my daddy, but the other daddies don't hit or yell at their kids. I don't understand why daddy doesn't love me. Tao tries to be good. I really try, but daddy never seems happy. I ran away so I wouldn't bother him and so I wouldn't get hit. I'm scared.'

'Mommy left daddy and Tao. Daddy said it was because she didn't want me. He said it was my fault that she left. I want mommy. It's so cold and my throat hurts. Whenever I cough red stuff comes out too. Is that supposed happen? No one comes through this alley. I wish someone would come. Anyone. I'm hungry. I think it's been almost 3 days since I last had any food. I drink the dirty rain water, but it always makes Tao puke. Maybe if I sleep the pain will go away.'

'Someone is coming through the alley. Oh it's just another hobo. He gave me a dirty look. I'm doing nothing wrong! Why does everyone hate me?! Don't cry Tao. Daddy will hit you if you cry remember? He has food. So hungry. Will he share? Ah no of course not. He just ran away. Someone is throwing away their trash. Ah some leftover hamburger. Food is so good. Huh? I'm crying? Why? Tao stop crying. Please. Stop crying. Oh... it's turning black... I'm a little sleepy... I'll just... rest my eyes....for a bit.'

'It's raining again. I'm hungry again. Why is it so cold today? Maybe I should just give in and go back home. No! I don't want to hurt anymore. Daddy will just hit Tao again. Footsteps... another hobo probably why bother looking up. I just want someone... anyone to love me... please. I can't stop crying now. Oh the footsteps are coming back. Why?'

"Hey. Are you ok? What's wrong? Are you hurt?"

'Wah such a deep voice. Oh he's handsome too. He reminds me of the angels in my picture books. Why is he looking at me like that? Ah right I should answer. Please voice. Please come out and tell him how terrible you feel! All I can do is cough. He's going to leave. What? It's warm. A jacket? He's picking me up! Why? I'm so confused what is going on?! Ah he's warm. So sleepy.'

'Hmm? A house? His house? It's so warm here. Where is he taking me? The bathroom. A bath? Wah! It's been so long since Tao got a bath.The new man has a sad look on his face? Why is he sad? Did Tao do something wrong? His hands are so big and gentle. I feel safe. What a big bed. I've never slept in a bed before. Daddy always said that beds were for good boys and that I didn't deserve one. Wait he's leaving. I'm scared. What if the bad man comes. Please don't go!'

"What's wrong?! Why are you crying?!"

'Ah he's mad now. I just don't want to be alone. Is it ok to ask him to stay?'

"Don't go...."

'Ah I said it. Is he going to hit me? I'm scared.'

"Ah. Well Gege needs to shower too. Would you like to come with me?"

'Huh? He's not mad? Yes! Please take Tao with you. Don't leave Tao alone! Ah he's picking me up again. I like it when he does that. '

"Before I get into the shower can you tell me your name?"

'He wants to know Tao's name? I guess it's alright to tell him.'

"Tao."

"It's nice to meet you Tao."

'Ah he's shaking my hand. His hand is so big! He's smiling. That means he's happy!'

"There we go! Finally a smile. Gege likes it when Tao smiles."

'Gege. Is that his name? Mmm sleepy. Floor is so warm. Wah he's tucking Tao in just like mommy did. Sleep.'
