SuperWan

little bits

Brave little Wendy ties her red blankie around her neck. She carefully puts on her bright red shoes and gives her unnie a salute.

"I'll be back," little Wendy says in what she believes to be a Superman voice.

She's going on an errand. Her unnie asked her to buy a bottle of soy sauce from the nearby convenience store and little Wendy will deliver!

With one small fist pointed forward, little Wendy runs out of the house and into the sidewalk, shooming and humming her own made up superhero background song.

Along the way she finds little baby Yeri.

Yeri's bike has a training wheel stuck on a road crack. The little girl has been trying her best to pedal her way out for some time but no dice.

Wendy rolls out her sleeves and dashes to her little friend immediately.

"Super Wendy to the rescue!"

Yeri looks up to the sound of her voice and gives her a bright smile.

"Hi unnie!"

Wendy stops right in front of Yeri, pudgy little arms poised on her hips in a hero pose.

"What seems to be the problem, citizen?"

Yeri blinks, eyes confused. Did her unnie forget her name or something?

"I'm Yeri," she reminds her carefully, just in case.

"Oh. Yeah, I know that, citizen."

Yeri crosses her arms and pouts. This unnie is being strange again.

"Are you stuck?" Wendy asks.

And now Wendy is cool in her eyes again. Yeri puts her hands on the handle bars, feet ready on the pedals and face beaming.

"Push me out, please!"

Wendy goes behind the little bike and pushes while Yeri pedals. It doesn't take long for the training wheel to get unstuck. Super Wendy has done it again!

"Bye citizen!" she waves before running away with her cape flapping behind her.

"My name is Yeri!"

There's a park that she passes by on the way where she finds her best friend Seulgi. With a smile on her face, Wendy takes a detour.

"Hello good knight!"

Seulgi squints her eyes at the greetings. Does Wendy not know it's still morning?

"Whatcha doin'?" Wendy asks.

"Oh, Joy said she wanted a good luck charm so I was trying to find her a four leafed clover."

"A goodluck charm?" Wendy exclaims. "I have just the thing!"

She rummages through her pocket with her little tongue sticking out and tells Seulgi to take her to Joy.

The two little friends walk towards the benches where Joy is play-cooking by herself.

Wendy proudly presents her goodluck charm and hands it over to an unimpressed looking Joy.

"That's a red lollipop."

Wendy gasps as if Joy had said the most scandalous thing in the whole entire world.

"It's a charm from the wizard!"

"You mean Jessica unnie? I think she's more of a scary witch."

Wendy gasps again, little hands clasping over her chest.

"I'm telling her you said that."

Seulgi quickly runs over to hug Wendy in place, scared that the girl just might actually start running and telling on Joy.

"Tattletale," grumbles Joy.

With a gentle pat over strong little hands and a quiet reassurance, Wendy gets Seulgi to let her go. She's an unnie, after all. Five years old. Practically a grown up.

Wendy sticks out her tongue at Joy and runs off to the store. Super Wendy still has an errand to run.

With a bottle of soy sauce and a couple other snacks in a plastic bag, Wendy hums an upbeat song as she walks back.

On the way, she finds her Irene unnie who looks like she's about to cry.

"Fairy princess Irene unnie, I'm on my way!"

Wendy runs carefully over to Irene, hugging the plastic bag close to her chest so it won't spill over.

Irene looks up to Wendy's voice and silently pleads for her to hurry.

"Fairy princess Irene unnie! Wendy is here!"

Somehow, that helps Irene shake herself from her almost frozen state, little legs quickly turning to run towards her friend in a hug.

It's a little awkward with the plastic bag between them but it's enough for Irene to find her voice.

"The doggy is mean," she whines. "Ate my toy."

Wendy looks behind Irene and finds a little puppy gnawing on a 'copter push toy.

With a puff of a determined chest, Wendy moves to push Irene behind her and tells the puppy to go away.

The puppy looks up, tilts it's tiny head as it regards the small child. It probably doesn't speak human, Wendy thinks.

But Wendy is very smart, too.

"Ruff! Ruff ruff!" little Wendy barks. "Ruff ruff ruff!!"

The puppy lets go of the toy to bark back once, tail wagging. Irene hugs Wendy tighter when the puppy stands, head hiding behind her friend's tiny back.

"Ruff ruff," Wendy barks gently.

It must have worked. The puppy soon finds a fallen leaf on the ground and chases after it, leaving the two kids alone.

There really is nothing Super Wendy can't do!

"You're safe now, fairy princess unnie," she tells her friend.

They walk together to the toy lying on the ground. Wendy uses her red cape to wipe at the puppy drool before handing it back to Irene.

"Thanks, Wendy," Irene says softly.

"I'm Super Wendy!" she says cheerfully, striking a pose and showing off her cape as best as she could.

Irene giggles at her silliness. Her friend has always had a wild imagination.

"Why am I a fairy princess, though?"

"You look like one," the little hero shrugs. "Seulgi's a knight," she adds.

She can't stay for long. The plastic bag in her arms are starting to tire her out. Wendy pulls out a candy bar and gives it to Irene.

"To cheer you up, unnie," she grins.

Little Wendy waves her goodbye and heads back home to deliver her last mission for the day.
