ruminate

little bits

Her hands feel frozen against the metal railing of the balcony. The air is dry out here. Her numbing nose is probably red. Joohyun breathes deep into her lungs, holds before exhaling.

Joohyun hates the cold.

It would probably be wise to step inside and get herself something warm. Preferably something edible, too. Any other time she'd be choosing wisely. Tonight, she needs to think.

The sound of sliding doors opening makes her jump. She half turns to see Seungwan with an armful of blanket, biting her lip unsurely although her gaze is steady, almost unyielding.

"Room for one more?"

It won't be so bad. She's never been shy around Seungwan anyway. Joohyun smiles and turns back around, confident that Seungwan understands all the same.

It doesn't take long until she hears the sound of sliding doors shut close. Joohyun keeps her smile tempered and waits.

"Bad day?"

Seungwan drapes the soft material around her back and doesn't let go until Joohyun moves to hold it still on her own.

"Bad week, actually," she says first then thinks it over, frowns and corrects, "bad year."

The resounding laugh isn't exaclty unexpected but it still startles her nonetheless. Joohyun would have hit her if it weren't for the warm blanket she's clutching onto. She knows what she's thinking about. Self blame never looked good on anyone, especially not Son Seungwan.

"Sorry." Seungwan gives her back a small pat, eyes still radiant and mirthful.

"Weirdo," she mumbles.

There's not much said after that. Joohyun keeps her stare ahead, looking over the colorful artificial lights that dances to the darkness. Seungwan casually stands next to her, silent.

It's interesting, Joohyun thinks, how one can still have their own space in spite of having someone stand so close.

They were kids once, the two of them. Well, young adults. Younger adults. Joohyun feels like she's aged several years more than the actual time that has passed and then some.

She's grown more, lived more, known more. So much has happened that sometimes she wonders if she has changed. As she often does when it's just them, she asks.

"In what way?" Seungwan shifts so she can face Joohyun more comfortably. She's only in her thick white hoodie and a poor excuse of pajama bottoms. It's unsettling.

"You'll get cold."

It's not a question, of course. It irks Joohyun how she didn't notice it before.

Seungwan only smiles without comment and steps into the blanket as Joohyun had offered. She's not one to get cold easily but she's not against a little warmth either.

They don't snuggle but they are close enough to feel that familiar thrum of spark between skins, Joohyun more so since she's spent more time huddled in the thick fabric.

It's comforting; comfortable.

"I think I've changed," Joohyun says after a while.

Any other day, Seungwan would have jokingly turned to assess her with a teasing smirk and playful pick up lines.

Tonight, the atmosphere calls for something that requires a little more care than that.

"You have," she simply replies.

Joohyun clutches the blanket a little tighter, mind thundering like a roman chariot. "Is it bad?"

There's a hum, then a bump. Seungwan steps even closer, a small reassurance that Joohyun didn't know she needed.

"Everyone changes," Seungwan begins. "Little things can change in people too. I'm just glad you still have what makes you, you."

This is what stays the same.

Seungwan gives the advice she also needs for herself just as much as Joohyun does the same. They're not two sides of the same coin but rather different coins of the same side.

This is okay, for now.

"Thanks."

Joohyun lets go of the blanket and drapes it around Seungwan thoroughly, taking care to make sure she'll be warm before stepping away.

"No problem."

Seungwan watches her walk back inside, happy that she's at least lessened the heavy thoughts that Joohyun mostly keeps to herself.

"Hey Bae Joohyun," she calls out. She watches Joohyun's eyebrows adorably furrow, mouth tensing up for that predictable protest. Almost like she's back. "Unnie," Seungwan hurries to say first, "I'm glad you're Bae Joohyun."

Joohyun doesn't say anything back but Seungwan understands that smile all the same.
